“There is a vitality, a life force, an energy, a quickening that is translated through you into action, and because there is only one of you in all of time, this expression is unique. And if you block it, it will never exist through any other medium and it will be lost. The world will not have it. It is not your business to determine how good it is nor how valuable nor how it compares with other expressions. It is your business to keep it yours clearly and directly, to keep the channel open.” –Martha Graham
In addition to my interests in social justice, equality, and Political Science, I have had the pleasure of pursuing my other passion – Modern Dance. I began my dance training at the Sydney King School of Dance. I later studied at the New Freedom Theatre (under the direction of Patricia Scott Hobbs), where I worked with several artists including Kariumu Welsh, Deborah Chase-Hicks, and Jawole Willa Jo Zollar, and at the Philadelphia Dance Company (Philadanco), where I was a member of Danco II, the company’s apprentice performance group.
I graduated with a BA in Dance and Politics from Randolph Macon Woman’s College (currently known as Randolph College) where I studied with Pamela Risenhoover and performed works made famous by the Martha Graham Dance Company, Jose Limon Dance Company, the Joffrey Ballet, the Paul Taylor Dance Company, and the Jump Rhythm Jazz Project. I also studied at the University of the Arts, the American Dance Festival, the Merce Cunningham Dance Company, and the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater.
Despite my busy schedule, I take class regularly with the amazing faculty in Bucknell’s Department of Theatre and Dance. I’ve also had the opportunity to perform regularly in Showcase performances, to guest teach Modern II, and the opportunity to choreograph for the Fall 2015 Mainstage Dance Concert: Here and There.
